The pupils of St. Michael’s take part in many sporting activities. In the Autumn Term the boys compete in the Cumann na mBunscoil Football competitions and the girls compete in the same competition in Camogie. To date the boys team usually gets through to the final while the girls often get to the semifinal. In the Summer term the teams switch; the boys play in the hurling section of the Cumann na mBunscoil competition while the girls play in the football section.
In the second term both boys and girls take part in the F.A,I. Schools’ Soccer Competition in Clara Lane here in Cootehill. Both teams generally play well on the day, but in 2016 the boys’ team qualified for he Final in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Two bus loads of pupils traveled to the Aviva to support the boys and, though they didn’t win a great day was had by all.
In December several of the pupils take part in a Swimming Gala in Cavan Town. The children enjoy swimming and usually come home with lots of medals. All pupils from First Class to Sixth are offered swimmng lessons in Monaghan in the third term.
Soccer Blitzes and Basketball Blitzes are always held in the Third Term also. There are two Soccer blitzes; Third Vs Fourth, and Fifth Vs Sixth. There are medals for First and Second in both competitions and a trophy for First in the Fifth and Sixth Blitz. The Basketball Blitz is usually played with pupils from Fifth and Sixth only, and again there are medals for First and Second.
Occasionally coaches come into our school and we are extremely grateful for the help and training they give. Aidan McCabe trains the Seniors in Gaelic for approximately six weeks of the year, Des O’Connor and Daniel train many of the classes in Soccer throughout the year, Kevin Carney has trained the boys’ hurling team on a number of occasions. We have had a Tag Rugby Coach, a Tennis Coach and a Dancing Teacher also over the past number of years. In January 2019 we were fortunate to be able to offer Gymnastics classes at a reduced rate for all pupils. Thanks to LA Gymnastics Club from Killeevan in Monaghan for facilitating these classes.
A word of thanks also to Ms. Anderson and Mrs. Sheenan for all their help and support with sport in St. Michael’s. Thanks also to Mr. McCrudden and Mr. McPhillips who give of their time generously to promote sport in the school.
Míle Buíochas daoibh!
